Avant Garde – #’s 1 – 12
Photographed the covers of Avant Garde Magazine, issues 1 through 12 today. I subscribed to the magazine, that’s the only reason I have a full set of the first year; not sure why I didn’t renew.
My favorite issues are: #1 with the Paul Lindner paintings; issue #2 Marilyn Monroe with the Bern Stern portfolio of screen prints; #5 the Tom Wesselman cover and paintings, also great article on the “Hogfarm” (Wavy Gravy); No. 8 Picasso’s Erotic Gravures.
Other issues worth mentioning (viewrs will have their own personal favs): #11 with Wedded Bliss: A Portfolio of Erotic Lithographs by John Lennon, also a Nice article about Gustav Klimt; issue #7 has the photo feature Paul Wunderlich’s Painted Women.
The pulp paper used for the inside pages has doomed the longevity of these relics – the sulfuric acid content will cause the pages to grow brittle and eventually disintegrate. Some sort of archival process can prolong the life of the paper, but that’s not a concern for me – so the magazines and I will grow old together.
Enjoy the photographs . . .
