w-e-l-l . . . back to the practical side of life . . . for a few minutes.

Yeh it’s shipping pallet time . . . again.

I was watching some stuff on shipping container homes and there was this guy who had a pipe dream . . . to escape the city and go live “off-the-grid” in a rural area of OK-la-homa where the wind comes sweeping off the plains . . . calls em tornadoes these days . . . anyway . . . this guy’s dream consisted of buying a 40 foot shipping container and turning it into his . . . move-to-the-country . . . fuck-the-system get-away . . . he moved a prefab shed to “Elysian Fields” (his name for the property he bought) . . . to live in while he constructs his “container” home . . . I noticed he has also acquired a 20 foot travel trailer . . . what am I getting at ?? Mr. “Elysian Fields” now has a PayPal donation can on his blog for $$ to help build his “dream” . . . WTF ?!

. . . oh, shipping pallets . . .
how-to-make your shipping container look less like a shipping container . . . ??

Some people who have built homes using shipping containers spend tons of $$$ adding insulation and stuff INSIDE the container . . . inside dimensions BEFORE make-over are as follows: 7’8″ wide and 7’9″ in height . . . doesn’t make much sense to cut down interior space by approximately 9″ . . . so . . . my proposa,l and the solution put forth by other container aficionados is . . . insulate the EXTERIOR of the structure!

Shipping pallets provide ready made sections for exterior framing . . . use 2X4’s to join the pallets, eliminates buying lumber for framing as well as sheathing . . . rigid sheet insulation can be attached directly to the pallets, and, adding siding is EZPZ . . .

I’m trying to keep this simple, but . . . be aware that there’s more to this . . . 40 foot containers are 40 feet long and a bitch to maneuver . . . plus they weigh in excess of 4 tons !! so unless you got a lot of free space to maneuver, stick with the 20 foot models . . . the 20 foot containers are not impacted as severely structurally when adding doors and windows like the 40 footers . . . 40 foot modules need more foundation than the shorter 20 footers. Lots of engineering metadata . . .

An example of two 8 foot X 20 foot containers with an 8 foot X 8 foot module . . . the bathroom is a wood frame structure . . . don’t ask.

I use the Home Design 3D app on my iPad 2 . . . my only gripe with the app is you can’t add a second floor . . .
