123D Catch . . .

. . . new app . . . for me . . . from Autodesk . . . like AUTOCAD . . .

123D Catch designed by Autodesk is a mind warp . . . 3D model generator . . . you take 40 different shots of an object then submit to Autodesk for processing.

Wat you get back is a 3D render of your object . . .

Oh . . . should mention that this app is for the iPad ONLY . . . and a LOT of people have commented, “. . . too bad the app is for just the iPad . . . would be great for the iPhone/iPod Touch . . .” yeh . . . but it seems that the app was developed with the desk jockey in mind . . . you know like in-house quickie 3D rendering of an actual object . . . I can vision the app as an intermediate step in the R&D process . . . like having several jpegs taped to the monitor for reference as you whack out a scale model in AUTOCAD !!

. . . as I said, the app SEEMS to be for preliminary design work . . . like make a 3D maquette out of clay or styrofoam etc. capture it with the 123D Catch app for a blow yer mind presentation . . . it is not really suited to the great outdoors . . . YET . . . for the app to work well outside the office it would have to function like a GPS total station with the capability to store multiple sets of data . . . oops, getting off-track here . . .

The object image shown here was generated with less than 40 frames so there are literally holes . . . but you get a feel for the structure . . . AND . . . the images by themselves would get some interesting conversations started.

You can save different object views to the camera roll . . . very nice.

Autodesk . . . thankyouveddymuch !!

Here’s a pic of the meditation shed without any FX’s . . .
