Old school – NEW world

Bridging the gap . . .

Sometimes you have an image that’s out-of-focus slightly . . . just wrong . . . butcha can’t dump it . . . so what do ya do? I ran my wild child through Pixlr-o-matic app (a random FX generator) and . . .
I tweaked the frame/film options for the final graphic image.

Here’s the original shot with my “broke” Nikon Coolpix:

Yesterday . . .

Yesterday or was it the day before . . . I posted a photo of a squash blossom and today I decided to post the original image . . .

Original . . .

And the manipulated image.

Two or 3 squash blossoms from my grandson’s box garden.

What people are unaware of is that I have been doing photography since 1970 . . . old school darkroom processing . . . shooting with film (color transparency, black & white and color negative) . . . manual & semi-automatic 35mm cameras . . . no digital 24 megapixel digital auto-focus BS . . . No Instagram smart phone social Pinterest disease.

Now my old cameras languish in storage boxes . . . I shoot almost exclusively with my iPod Touch 5G and occasionally with a beat-up 12 megapixel Nikon Coolpix.

My “darkroom” is my iPad 2 . . .
Have a nice weekend.

2 days after the equinox . . .

clouds . . .

one day until trash day . . . and the clouds were doing their atmospheric thing . . .

Used the Nikon Coolpix for these snaps . . .

a penny 4 yer thoughts . . .

I came across this coin in my pocket the other day . . . at first I thought it was medallion of some sort and then I turned over . . . it’s a penny with a little figure painted over the bust of Lincoln . . . WTF ?!

Too much time with nothing better to do or . . . too much time . . . yeh, you get it . . . ever see one of these OR do you know who the little character is ?

Shot the pic with the Nikon COOLPIX . . . macro setting . . . slight underexposure for better color saturation and no flash

spring . . .

The hummingbird moths (White-lined Sphinx MothHyles lineata) have returned to greet the lilacs . . . this little bugger was resting on the door frame next to the doorknob . . . had to be careful opening and closing the door.

I had planned to use the iPod Touch 5G but changed my mind and shot with the Nikon Coolpix using the 12mp mode . . . looking for the detail . . . I can always dump the images into one of the darkroom apps if I feel the need for some excitement . . . I did mess with the brightness and contrast (PhotoForge 2) . . .

Update

I shot a few more pics of the moths this afternoon (Coolpix) . . . cropped, adjusted contrast & brightness then increased saturation cos the birds were shot against the sky . . .

Alone in Lithuania (part I)

20121010-201736.jpg

. . . the only hook-up with Lithuania is graffiti I saw in Wyoming . . . the word “Lithuania” had been scratched on a rock art panel . . . that’s it . . . but now that I think about it, I read a post with that same title a month or two ago . . . probably should have titled this post “alone in the gym” . . .

It’s definitely fall here in the mountains . . .

I’ve been working-out at the local fitness center for 9 weeks now, and a new person is slowly emerging from 68 years of accumulated detritus . . . I’m regaining lost musculature as well as some much needed mental discipline . . .

. . . as a bodybuilder was to have said . . . or something like . . . “you have the tools, use them . . . so I’m shaking off the dust, grinding away at the rust . . .

Does this relate to anything ??

Yeh . . . I’ll set off in pursuit of a personal trainer certificate in another 30 days . . . setting-up my screen printing equipment, and doing a bit more “serious” digital photography.

Everything is about “form” . . .

SLOW DOWN . . . pay attention to the mechanics . . . and the old monk scratched the following in the dirt . . . ATTENTION . . . then disappeared into the forest.

Pics taken with my Nikon Coolpix set at 8 megapixels, and run through the PhotoForge 2 washer . . . several times.

yesterday . . . today

yesterday or maybe the day before I posted some pics showing molds for slip-casting . . . and the gallon containers for the liquid clay . . .

20120711-160611.jpg

here’s what you get after pouring the slip into the molds etc etc etc . . .

20120711-160542.jpg

20120711-160556.jpg

After pouring out the excess slip and allowing the clay to set-up (3 to 4 hours) . . . straps or rubber bands holding the molds together are removed, and the molds are opened, the still damp cup, vase . . . watev . . . is taken out and allowed to become “leather” hard, that is, not completely dry, but solid enough to allow for trimming seam flashing.

Once the vessel is dry it can be sanded glazed and fired.
This is just a fast description of the process . . .

20120711-155229.jpg

20120711-155235.jpg

Production slip-casting and press-molding with clay slabs is an alternative to wheel-thrown pottery/ceramics . . . any of the aforementioned methods for producing ceramic vessels are time consuming, and require several years of research, apprenticeship and/or trial and error . . . and at best, all three . . . there are things you will never learn at art school . . .

dredging the canal . . .

20120619-194743.jpg

once a year the big irrigation canal that runs through the valley is dredged to clean the channel . . . muck out the bicycles . . . crayfish etc etc . . .

20120619-194753.jpg

20120619-194805.jpg

. . . pix taken with the Nikon Coolpix L22, (8mpx resolution) . . . ramped contrast and bumped up color saturation a bit due to the monochromatic aspect of the dry mud . . . PhotoForge 2 camera app.

20120619-194720.jpg

I always think of H. R. Giger and “Alien” whenever I find these exoskeletal remains . . . must not to forget Sigourney Weaver . . . !!

20120619-194733.jpg

. . . temperature today was 100 degrees F. or so . . . or 37.8 C.
a bit warm and humid . . . fortunately up here in the high desert the inner workings of these beasts dry up quickly and so not really any stench . . . other than decaying vegetal matter . . .

Museum . . .

After finishing some scanning (Museum photos) this morning, I decided to take some photos of machinery (wagons, farm equipment old cars etc.) . . . out in the Museum yard, grounds . . . outdoor storage . . . unlimbered the Nikon Coolpix and went-a-hunting . . .

20120126-191027.jpg
Remnants from an earlier photo exhibit . . .

I was looking for industrial items . . . things that were representative of the development settlement of the Valley . . . hand-powered stuff . . . saws, milling stones . . .
