Virginia Street, Reno, Nevada

Visited “The Biggest Little City“, Reno, Nevada yesterday (12 JAN 2010). This was the first time that I actually took some time to walk-about and take-in the atmosphere of the city.

Reno has all types of art – casino facades, murals, sculpture . . .

One of the things I noticed about Reno was the absence of spray painted script (”tags”. However, “tagging” does occur, as evidenced by swatches of subdued color – “public art” is discretely painted over so that the original scribbles no longer exist except as paint roller applied critique.

I was in search of the fabled “poker chips”, a 3D mosaic installation that I had been told about. Today I was packing the Canon EOS 10D with a 50mm Canon EF 1:1.4 lens to make use of the diffuse, overcast light (ISO 800).

Shooting with a fixed focal length lens makes you “work” for your shot, so I proceeded down the sidewalk to the intersection for a better perspective.

Initially I thought the “chips” would be a little more monumental in scale, but they are big enough, and unique. Sort of “Art Deco” . . .

Looking SSW . . . down Virginia Street

The old Fitzgerald Casino is diagonally across the intersection. The famous “Arch” (not McD”s) is on the south side of Commercial Street, over Virginia Street.

. . . so cool !!

I didn’t notice the brass plaque near the base of one stack of chips – seems this was installed as a part of Reno’s public art project a few years ago.

Reno eNVy – Props

Shot some photos of my meibutsu from a shop in Reno, Nevada – happens to be near where my daughter holes-up during the school year; got a great Greek sandwich shop and the Reno eNVy store in a place nearby called “The Market Place”. It’s located west of Virginia Street and half a block north of First Street; got a wine tasting place and some other shops worth a look if you’re in the area and haven’t spent all your money in the casinos. >OO<

meibutsu is Japanese for “souvenir”

Reno NV

Drove to Reno, NV to pick-up my daughter (semester break). Located just north of the junction of Hwy 95 and the cut-off to Hwy 6 are the concrete remnants of some sort of structure; the surfaces of walls, large blocks and the interior of a rectangular column have been spray painted or “tagged”. I have seen the site several times, but have not taken the time to stop and document this outdoor “exhibition”. Today (12/11/09) I stopped and recorded some footage (approximately 10 minutes) with my Flip Mino HD. Here are some stills clipped from the video.

People who write their names and nothing else I consider “spoilers”, like the guy who unscrews the tops on salt and pepper shakers in restaurants.
